This is my first Teneriffe Lace Medallion. I found an interesting book on Teneriffe lace at the antique pattern library website. I downloaded "Teneriffe Lace Design and Instructions, copyrighted in 1904 by Earl & Co. There are over 40 designs to make of teneriffe lace. This is Design No 1. It is referred to as one of the classic designs of the Teneriffe lace wheel. I decided that I would try to make it. I was not sure that I would enjoy the craft. So, I made my own wheel from foam core and polar graph paper. It was interesting taking the written instructions and adapting them to something I understood. I was happily surprised that it held its shape when off the wheel. Since it is harder to see very fine thread, I used size 10 crochet thread. This also gave me a great choice in colors. I like the stain glass effect of open spaces. I thought that this would make a great ornament or addition to clothing.
This is the my first piece of Romanian Lace. I chose a heart because it was right before valentine day. I was happy that the heart maintained it's shape when I removed it from the loom. I enjoyed the fact that I could and do a line drawing of the image I wanted to weave. This is very different from bobbin weaving. With bobbin weaving one predetermines where all the pins wil go. With this I laid my braid around the drawing and pinned into place. I had much more freedom of design as I went along.
This ebook is the result of a class I taught at the San Francisco Public Library. The book explains step-by-step how to make a simple wheel (loom), stretch the weaving web, various stitches, and how to finish your work. When you finish the book you will have a completed medallion. This medallion can be used to as an ornament, art work, or added to clothing. There are over 66 pictures, 36 figures, and 6 tables. It also suggests how to make 3 different variations to the darning and or weaving to have slightly different medallions. No ai was used to produce this book. This directions were developed as the weaving was made. I hop you enjoy this book.
