This collection is an exploration in abstraction with the random textures produced by hand-made papers.  We present works that are the intersection of the intentional and planned traditional expression with the unplanned, naturally occurring,  randomness of the textures created by the settling of liquid pulp into simple forms. Although the pieces take on conventional forms, the surfaces are suggestive of more imaginative sensations. This is a continuation of the formal properties of the juxtaposition of colors laid over a field of random texture. This would be a post-modernist adaptation of color-field painting. In our opinion, color-field painting is not simply a brief period in American Abstract-expressionist art, but an opening to apply color sensations to contemporary moods.

We collected many forms to cast the wet pulp into the shapes in this collection. Surface effects were added to capture the imagination.

“I like the unique randomness of the paper texture. It suggests color possibilities that engage the imagination”

1. Start with small strips of paper, make into confetti
2. soak overnight
3. mix with water, grind to pulp in a blender
4. pour into sheets or forms (bowls, etc.)
5. apply surface effects

These paper bowls are on exhibit at Brisbane City Hall during March & April 2010.
