I. a distillation of many afternoons sitting on the cliffs watching the sun set at the ocean.

One day on the news they were discussing the recycle centers. They showed one that had been recycling paper. They were no longer able to sell the used paper for recycling because of the recession. It had accumulated to more then a football field. So, I decide it might be interesting to try making paper from my old computer, mail, newspapers etc. I even got my husbands art class interesting in trying to make their own paper for painting. Some they will have a show of their up-cycled art work. Here are a few of the bowls I made from up-cycled computer paper. It is so nice to know that the paper because something useful and did not end up in the land fill.

The art class Sean Yore is teaching has been exploring up-cycling items from the home. The class has explored both collage and paper making. These are handmade paper bowls from upcycle/recycled computer paper. These were made by the artist Linda Hagen and Sean Yore. The computer paper was made into a paper pulp. The paper pulp was then formed into the shape of a bowl. This was allowed to dry. After the bowls had dried they were painted with various colors. Some of the bowls the pulp was dyed then formed into a bowl. The stones in the bowls are there to keep them from flying away.

twodifferentpulps1.jpgRecently Sean and I have been experimenting with handmade paper.  Upcycling our mail, flyers, and newspaper. Taking the used paper and ripping it into smaller pieces, soaking overnight, then putting in the blender. With this pulp we have then created small sheets of paper. This sheet was created using two different color pulps. The center which might be a bird (some think is a seal) is made from computer tractor feed paper. The grayer outline is made from newspaper.

grasses1.jpg This piece of upcycle art work is made from newspaper. The grasses are painted with oils. The surface is not primed so the color and texture of the repurposed handmade paper comes through.

It has been interesting working with paper to create new paper. Many more experiments with paper will be coming.

These are works in progress.  The class has been painting with sponges a theme of ocean scenes.  It has been fun trying to use various types of sponges to paint with acrylic paint.  I like the sponges with the big holes in them that are sold for washing cars.  Sean likes the sponges with the finer texture. The paintings are on watercolor paper.  We did not work from photos but from our imagination that was the memory of many hours sitting on the bluffs above the ocean. Enjoy the pictures and let us know what you think.

Wearable aceo is a new way of looking at aceos.  It is meant to bring the aceo out into the public view so even strangers can see you aceo.  This one is a fabric aceo made from upcycled materials.  I cut fannel fabric into strips. The fabric strips were then knitted into a container. A piece of foam core was inserted to keep the aceo stiff. It was then closed at the top. As the fabric strips were knitted the eyes and nose were added.  The hair was added at the completion of the piece.  I hope you enjoy it and it brings a smile to you face.
